City within a City
The regeneration of Digbeth, through the new and exciting “Beorma Quarter” project, will see an inspiring and vibrant piece of urban design come to Birmingham, bringing new life to the historic heart of the city.
The design will stand comparison to the very best of Birmingham’s existing developments and enhance the wider vision of a world class city. The height, public spaces, housing and retail units and future use of listed buildings have all been reviewed and refined following comprehensive consultation.
The Beorma Quarter builds on the history of the site and contains some of the city’s last surviving remnants of the medieval property subdivision system, characterised by groups of long, thin plots with narrow frontages known as Burgage Plots, that are a crucial part of Birmingham’s history. By extruding the tower from the burgage
plots, the Beorma Quarter pays tribute to this history.
Located within the Digbeth, Deritend and Bordesley High Streets Conservation Area No. 31, the Beorma Quarter reflects the industrial and engineering history of the city with the large Grade 2 listed Digbeth Coldstore building and a number of other locally listed properties situated on Digbeth.
Birmingham is undergoing a dramatic regeneration. The Beorma Quarter is playing a key part in this progress by bringing a much needed new and exciting development to Digbeth. Sitting as a perfect counterpoint to the moulded form of the Selfridges building, it offers a strong statement of confidence in Birmingham.
The Beorma Quarter is a ‘city within a city’, looking positively to the future by celebrating the best of the past.”
